About Maureen

Maureen Barrett has been licensed as a registered nurse in California since 1982.  Her experience is extensive and varied and includes emergency medicine, critical care, oncology and plastic and reconstructive surgery.  She worked at Sequoia Hospital, in the San Francisco Bay Area, for 15 years before turning her attention to cosmetic medicine.

In the late 1980’s, as a registered nurse with a background in art, she became intrigued by the idea of permanent makeup and reconstructive tattooing but was disappointed by the harsh and unnatural look.  Cosmetic tattooing was in its infancy and the results were often hard and artificial looking.

In 1996, through the offices of prominent plastic surgeon, Dr. Donald Laub, she discovered the natural looking results that could be achieved with permanent makeup.  A career in cosmetic medicine allowed her to combine her artistic talent with her medical abilities.  “I was an art minor in college and loved portrait work.   In the late ‘70’s I reluctantly realized I did not have the talent to support myself as an artist so followed the family footsteps into nursing.  Nursing was a wonderful career choice and very fulfilling, but didn’t satisfy my aesthetic sensitivities.  Cosmetic medicine has opened so many doors for me.”

In 1997 she trained with Sally Hayes at her clinic in Scottsdale Arizona.  Ms. Hayes developed a specialized hand technique of applying permanent makeup that produced soft and natural looking results.  In 1998, Maureen continued to develop her own style of application by taking additional training in the Sof Tap method of permanent makeup application, developed by another leader in the industry, Alexis Lawson.

She opened her business in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1998 with referrals from physicians and plastic surgeons.  One year later she moved her busy practice to the Central Valley following her husbands’ business transfer.  She established her practice in association with well known local plastic and reconstructive surgeons and continued to expand her cosmetic expertise.  She continued her education and added cosmetic peels, dermal fillers and Botox to her list of services.

Maureen divides her time between several offices in the Central Valley and San Francisco Bay Area.  In Fresno she works in association with Dr. Thomas Mitts, a prominent plastic surgeon whose services include the latest in laser treatments for the face.  In Visalia, her services are offered at the Renu Medical Spa, a beautifully appointed and fully staffed Medical Spa offering a variety of cosmetic treatments for the face and body.  In the Bay Area, she works with Dr. June Engle at the Health Medicine Institute which combines the best of modern medicine and alternative health care.

Since 1998 Maureen has focused her attention exclusively on the practice of cosmetic medicine.  After many years and thousands of applications, she has perfected the natural look of soft, subtle permanent makeup.  Combining her skill with dermal fillers like Collagen and Restylane; rejuvenating skin care treatments; and Botox, she offers an alternative to invasive surgery of the face and can give any man or woman a more youthful appearance.
